And he sat and he… Talking about Simmons drums!

To the tune of Waltzing Matilda:

Andy sat and he shat while he waited till his billy boiled.

My Day is complete – Andy’s on the blog again

Simmons drums!

Recently on the radio I heard Marshall Hain’s (only) hit single, "Dancing In The City" which reached the top 30 in the UK in 1978.
Such a wonderful electronic drum sound! It had to be Simmons drums, a company started by Dave Simmons in St. Albans, Herts UK. He was responsible for so many of those Doooooo Doooooo drum sounds in 80’s music. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, here’s a sound clip as a reminder:
I heard that Rusty Eagan used to play live Simmons drums over 12" singles while he was DJ’ing in North London night clubs (Camden?). Must have been quite a sound.
During my final year at Hatfield Polytechnic in 1987, Simmons were kind enough to loan me some of their hexagonal drum pads to trigger my home-made digital sound sampler based around an Atari 800XL. At the time, Simmons were proudly showing their flagship SDX drum system. Alas, it was the beginning of the end for the company.
So I started looking around the web and here are some worthy sites keeping the memory alive:
Such a great sound. No wonder East Enders (BBC TV) uses Simmons drums in its theme tune.
Andrew Delin has been scouring eBay for Simmons drums!
